N-Acetyl Glucosamine

l N-Acetyl Glucosamine(GlcNAc, NAG)

N-acetyl glucosamine (also known as N-acetylglucosamine) is a type of sugar available in dietary supplement form. Chemically similar to glucosamine, N-acetyl glucosamine occurs naturally in the outer shells of certain insects and shellfish.

l Benefits of GlcNAc

² GlcNAc is used to treat Joint Damage.[1-7]

² GlcNAc to treat Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).[8-11]

² Application of GlcNAc in Cosmetics. [12-18]

² GlcNAc suppress Multiple Sclerosis.[19]

l Safety of GlcNAc

A large dose of GlcNAc (20 g) given intravenously to human volunteers results in neither toxicity nor alteration of blood glucose concentration [20, 21]. A lack of insulin resistance was also found after oral administration of GlcNAc, even at a high dose. Systematic toxicological tests have been performed in animals, including the acute toxicity test, Ames test, micronucleus test of mouse bone marrow cells, abnormality test of mouse sperm, aberration test of mouse testis chromosomes, chronic lethal test, sub-chronic toxicity test (for 90 days) and traditional deformity-inducing test [22,23]. These experiments indicate that GlcNAc is a valuable compound with high safety in invaded, oral and topical usage.
